Several technical papers presented at this year’s Offshore Europe Conference focus on building collaborative environments and reducing carbon emissions.

Highlights of a few:

In a paper titled, “The Implementation of a Drilling and Completions Advanced Collaborative Environment?Taking Advantage of Change,” authors from BP Exploration described how structuring a new Advanced Collaborative Environment (ACE) was integral to the opening of its new Aberdeen office. This also coincided with a major reorganization within the company that caused it to examine its operations.
In a pilot project, three ACE implementation types were tested. One provided dedicated data feeds and visualization tools within the normal work area, operating only during normal working hours. The others were asset-based on site, and included outsourcing. The selected configuration was closest to the first of these models. The company concluded that the realization of many of the benefits would hinge on employee attitudes, behaviors, and working practices.

In “Reusing Oil and Gas Depleted Reservoirs for CO2 Storage: Pros and Cons,” authors from Schlumberger Carbon Services said that the two main types of reservoirs considered for geological storage of CO2?deep saline formations and depleted oil and gas reservoirs?offer different challenges. Saline formation has a high level of uncertainty because of poor characterization of their properties, including sealing capacity. Depleted reservoirs have smaller overall capacity, but with a reduced risk due to better reservoir knowledge. Gas reservoirs have also provided a proven seal to pressurized gas.
Depletion can cause pore collapse in the reservoir, with an associated loss of capacity and injectivity, weaken caprock and bounding faults, or well completions, leading to possible containment losses because of mechanical failure. Reservoirs are also intersected by many wells and it is likely that stricter regulatory requirements on well integrity and the quality of zonal isolation will force operators to recomplete or work over wells exposed to CO2, increasing costs.

In “Well Design Differentiators for CO2 Sequestration in Depleted Reservoirs,” an author from Helix RDS outlined key differentiators between conventional well-design techniques and CO2 injection wells in depleted gas reservoirs. CO2 sequestration into depleted reservoirs can be achieved effectively and safely from a well-design perspective. The paper reviewed the unique operating environment of a CO2 injection well, identified differentiators, and evaluate the impact on the well design.
In a presentation on “CO2 Injection Into Depleted Gas Reservoirs,” authors from BP and Petroleum Experts described the challenges associated with modeling CO2 injection into depleted reservoirs, and the application of integrated asset modeling in planning CO2 injection.
Depleted gas fields represent an opportunity for CO2 storage but low reservoir pressure will present difficulties for CO2 injection because of CO2 phase behavior issues. This will constrain the operating injection parameters during the early stages of injection.
